Competitive and fast are two terms that are applicable to the world of computers. Constantly changing and evolving computer systems bring many advantages to the users and techies alike. The race for supremacy between the yet to be launched Vista (scheduled for 2006) and Mac OSX Tiger began in 2003 with Microsoft’s announcements of plans for an integrated desktop search functionality in Windows Vista.
While opinions vary and are really personal choices in many ways, the following sums up the functionalities between Vista and Tiger.
1. Vista has a completely redesigned look and feel; it is aesthetic, functional, and exciting according to industry sources. Mac Tiger on the other hand was always famous for its technology and aesthetics which are clean and clutter free. In fact, many of the visual effects that Vista has like translucent icons, high resolution, and animation effects have been integral to Tiger for more than four years.
2. Vista is yet to resolve problems caused by underlying windows, while Tiger has fine tuned the bleed caused by windows beneath the surface ones.
3. The 128 x 128 pixel icons of Tiger have better rendition and clearer resolution than the 32 x 32 or 64 x 64 pixel icons of Vista. However one will only know whether Vista will have resolution independent vector graphics once the final version comes to the market.
4. Both Vista and Tiger have closely similar desk top search functions. The only immediate difference is that in Tiger the filtering becomes operational only after creation of a Smart Folder or using the shortcut keys. The Virtual Folder of Vista is identical to the Smart Folder of Tiger.
5. Vista has next generation features, where the system has enough inbuilt intelligence that organizes data. This fine tunes any searches that need to be done. In comparison to this, the Tiger has an old fashioned system with no specials.
6. Vista supports meta data processing while with Tiger meta data can be created or edited only by using document processing applications.
7. Vista permits users to visually locate files while Tiger does not. Image previews in Tiger are turned off by default.
8. As far as security is concerned the Tiger is by far superior to Vista. Since the Tiger user base is small the number of hackers and attackers are fewer as compared to Windows.
9. User accounts and log ins are safer in the Tiger system and Microsoft plans to incorporate similar systems in Vista to strengthen security.
10. Vista has new systems similar to Tiger that will enable users to assert parental locks or blocks. Parental controls help limit computer usage by children protecting them from several dangers.
11. Security in Vista includes inbuilt protection against rogue attacks, malware, spyware, adware and so on. In the case of Tiger its security system has remained secure and unbreached. Whether Vista will earn the same distinction will be known only after it comes into use.
12. Both Vista and Tiger have great networking features making both immensely usable both at home and in businesses. The Tiger is simpler while Vista is a bit more complex to use.
13. The hibernation mode works instantly in Tiger and Vista is also trying to match its facilities.
While the above draws tentative comparisons between the two systems a true evaluation can only be made once Vista is released in its completed version and comes into use.

Can it really be possible? Windows Vista, the newly released operating of Microsoft, is vulnerable to hacking? Yes, you heard it right. It is possible, according to Microsoft itself. Well, it appears that an audio podcast has the capability of hacking Windows Vista’s speech recognition feature. By using recorded audio commands, hackers can run malicious programs. Based on an initial investigation conducted by Microsoft, Vista’s speech recognition feature can allow an attacker to execute commands verbally on a user’s computer. The commands, however, are limited to the rights of a certain logged on user. Any commands on the administrative level will be barred by the User Account Control. Microsoft explains that the hacking can done when the user has a microphone and speakers connected to his or her computer with the speech recognition feature configured. Once these exist, the audio file of an attacker could issue verbal commands through the system’s speakers which could be executed by the speech recognition feature. With this flaw, it is possible for a podcast or any other audio file for that matter to delete documents of a Vista user and empty the trash. Users are advised to disable speech recognition within Vista. Microsoft assures its customers that it is continuously looking into the issue and will provide more guidance to protect them. To avoid this attack, Vista users are advised to take several steps. First is to turn off their computer speakers and microphone. The next thing to do is to close the Windows Media Player, turn off the speech recognition feature and restart the computer if the user runs an audio file that tries to execute commands on their system. A user can disable speech recognition by going to the speech recognition options and unchecking “run speech recognition at startup.� While there, a user can also disable the default speech profile for the system. This is to avoid the risk of outside voices and noise being recognized as valid for input instead of the user’s own voice. The recent launching of Microsoft Vista is the biggest ever in the history of Microsoft. It was the grandest launch because of the introduction of both a new Windows and Office operating system. It came five years after Windows XP was introduced. This early, Microsoft officials foresee that Vista will be accepted by people faster compared to other Windows operating systems. For the first two years, the firm expects to sell approximately 200 million copies to businesses and consumers around the world. Vista features unique graphics including 3-D icons and folders with the so-called transparent glass effects. The launch of this new upgrade, originally named Longhorn, had been postponed several times as Microsoft took extra efforts to make sure that Vista will be fully secured from more complex and high-tech Internet attacks. Microsoft Vista comes in four versions with advanced interface and security tools. To be able to run the system, you will need a minimum of an 800MHz processor, 512 RAM and a hard disk with a 15GB capacity. The firm also guaranteed that Vista will benefit gamers and game developers apart from businesses and regular consumers.

What is Vista?
Vista is the new version of Microsoft Windows, which will offer users a greatly improved browsing and computer experience mainly through more dynamic ‘live’ windows and faster presentation. It will offer a more robust security (direly needed!) and more business features in its corporate OS with encryption, Unix services, and virtual machine capabilities.
You will be able to use different graphical tools to more efficiently manage your information and applications on your desktop. There is one underlying reason why this may just be the case. According to the Longhorn Statement of last year, RSS will play a major role in these applications and in the OS itself. Longhorn is the name for the Microsoft Windows Server code. RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ and Microsoft should be applauded for bringing RSS to the forefront. Many believe RSS will change the very nature of how we use the Internet and our computers.
Regardless of what it may contain, the new Windows Vista has many consumers delaying the purchase of their next PC or laptop until the new Windows arrives. Many were hoping for a pre-Christmas release but…
When Will It Arrive?
According to Microsoft’s own official site on Vista, Windows Vista will be available in early 2007. However, Vista (as of Sept.22, 2006) is already in Beta testing with over 30,000 testers from around the globe. Vista will have TWO Interfaces
Vista Windows will have two interfaces, Basic and Aero. The Basic Interface will be similar to Windows XP and will run on most current PCs and Laptops. The Aero Interface is more advanced and you will need higher system requirements to take advantage of all the new features. (See Below)
Actually, Vista will have six versions in all. According to the Vista web site these versions will range for the very basic up to the highest performance level.
* Windows Vista Starter which runs only on 32-bit systems and will be so on new machines in India, Thailand and other emerging markets.
* Windows Vista Home Basic which is very comparable to XP Home which will not offer the high-end graphics and media features.
* Windows Vista Home Premium which will offer these graphics and media.
* Windows Vista Business which is similar to the current XP Professional.
* Windows Vista Enterprise will be only available to those customers with volume licenses - will offer Unix service, encryption and virtual machine capabilities.
* Windows Vista Ultimate will combine Vista Enterprise and Vista Home Premium which will give customers the highest version of Windows.
There will also be “N” versions of Vista Business and Vista Home Basic for the European market that will have Window Media Player removed. Microsoft is catering to all levels of the marketplace and its a prudent business move because many current PCs and laptops don’t have the system requirements to take advantage of the highest version of Vista Aero.
Your System Requirements for Vista?
Your system requirements for the new Windows Vista will depend on which version of Vista you’re buying. For the basic Vista you will need a modern processor (800MHz or more) with at least 512 MB of system memory. Your graphics processor should be DirectX 9 capable.
For the fully loaded Vista you will need a little more robust system with at least 1 GHz processor with 1 GB of system memory. This should be supported with DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB of graphics memory. A premium graphics card like ATI or NVIDIA is recommended and you will need a 40 GB hard drive with 15 GB free space. In order to watch and record live TV you may have to add additional hardware.

What noteworthy features will Vista give you?

One that really jumps out: INSTANT SEARCH
Instead of using the slow cascading “All Programs”, you can just type in a file name or task and you will find what you’re looking for. The new instant start menu will be a lot quicker, saving you time.
This also jumps out: DYNAMIC WINDOWS
Perhaps, one of the major improvement will be in the appearance and use of the new desktop with transparent “glass-like” windows and animated windows on the taskbar. It will have live thumbnails on the taskbar, place your mouse over these and you will see the live contents without having to bring it up on your screen. You will also be able to create a three-dimensional stack of open windows on your desktop and you will have smoother performance in dynamic content or windows such as video.

This program will encrypt your entire Windows system and protect your information in the case of a stolen or lost PC or laptop.
Then there is the Encrypting File System (EFS) which will protect user-level files and folders. This is important when two or more people share the same computer as in a company network. Companies will be able to use smart cards with EFS keys to allow employees or workers to access only the content that’s appropriate for them to access. All kidding aside, Windows Vista does offer some unique features that will change how we use our computers. It offers greater security and more integrated networking and applications. It does promise to make our desktop interaction more responsive and smoother with ‘live’ social bookmarks and windows. One can only hope Vista lives up to its name and gives us a whole new viewing experience.

You may have noticed a new error message upon Windows start-up since December 31, 2006. The error dialog looks like this:
Windows DefenderApplication failed to initialize: 0×800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender
Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.
In addition, you will see the following in your System Event Log:
Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system license has expired. Your logon request is denied.
The issue is that Windows Defender Beta support ended on December 31, 2006. Now, I would have expected this software license expire error to let you know a bit more gracefully.
The good news is that if your are running Windows XP, there is a easy fix. Simply go to Microsoft.com and look for the “Download Windows Defender” link near the bottom of the home page. Follow the download and install instructions, and you will be up to date, protected and will have fixed the start-up error in just minutes.
Now for the bad news…
If you are running Windows 2000, Microsoft has decided to no longer support the Windows Defender product for the Windows 2000 platform. You can fix the start-up error by uninstalling Windows Defender from the Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel. Unfortunately, this will leave you unprotected from Spyware and Malware. Since Microsoft is no longer providing a Spyware protection product for Windows 2000, you will need to purchase a third party product in order to be protected in the future.
I must say that I am more than annoyed by this decision at Microsoft to discontinue the Windows Defender product for Windows 2000. I am a big fan of Windows 2000 as it has been one of the most stable operating system made by Microsoft to date. I am aware that Microsoft has discontinued official support for Win2k as of June 30, 2005. Actually, it has entered the “Extended Support Phase” for the Win2k product. This means they will have “extended” support until June 2010… without Spyware protection! This is like the proverbial knife in the back for existing Win2k users. Actually, more like the proverbial gun to the head to get you to upgrade to Windows Vista.
Now, there is no doubt that Windows XP and Vista are a much better protected operating systems right out of the box. In the networks that I support, XP Pro SP2 or Windows 2003 Server is the standard for any new deployments. I just resent the gun to the head thing!
For Win2k users, you will obviously make your own decision about this dilemma in which I see you have three choices:
1) Uninstall Windows Defender and just take your chances on operating without Spyware protection.
2) Uninstall Windows Defender and purchase a third party Spyware protection product.
3) Decide to put your money towards the upgrade to XP or Vista, which will include the free
Spyware protection.
I would not recommend choice 1. The Internet is just too dangerous of a place to venture without protection. You may choose choice 2 because you love Win2k and just do not want to hassle with the potential upgrade headaches. Or, you may choose 3 because you are up to the upgrade task and you feel it make more sense to invest in the future.If you decide on the upgrade to Vista path, please look for my “Upgrading to Vista” article coming soon.

This is not about to turn out as an article on Ten Things I Hate About Vista. There is already a great number of technically enlightening pieces that will do that for anyone. This article will instead focus on what basic common user observations point out as unfortunate Vista innovations from old XP features. Some of the items are humorously simple and superficial. They should not be ignored though because a great majority of people around the world are not technology experts and can only make basic observations. Sometimes though, basic observations are what can make or break a product simply because there are more average people than computer geniuses.
Mail

Shockingly, some user tests show that .net applications simply run faster in XP than in Vista. If you have to process great amounts of data on .net applications, you may get frustrated with Vista. Users feel that in this respect, Vista only beats XP in the “looks� category. XP is still on top on the aspect of performance.
Shell
XPs Luna shell has now been dethroned by Vista’s Aero. The elegant 3D look and feel of Aero is probably an effective marketing strategy for average users. Experts point out however that a shell is still a shell and does not show real system capabilities. The Luna shell may have looked plain but it did not point to XPs real performance ability.
Battery Life
In another user comparative test, the battery life of laptops seemed to have held on much longer with XP than with Vista. Vista’s heavy graphics apparently drain more energy than the simpler XP graphics.
Icons and Tumbnails
XPs static icons have now gone six feet under with the introduction of Vista’s live icons and thumbnails. This is good right? Some users feel though that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the unresponsive icons of XP. Again, this is more an issue of superficiality. Live icons and thumbnails don’t mean anything on the performance arena.
Sounds
Users apparently put a lot of thought on system sounds. This is because some feel that sounds can better communicate computer generated messages like battery low or log on or off. XPs grand, booming sound is no longer around. It ha been replaced by more soft and subtle sounds that some users do not find indicative of whatever the system wants to say.
Boot
It is surprising to note that XP seems to boot faster than Vista in some cases. People, of course, want to know why and are wondering if there are also other things that are slower in Vista.
Hardware Requirements
The best thing that is in XP that is not in Vista is that it has lower hardware requirements. Vista is simply too high end in everything. This means that if you have a unit that cannot live up to what is required then you should just forget Vista unless you like having headaches. Users therefore who use their units for basic actions do not need to replace XP at all.
XPs Outlook Express is no longer around. It is still questionable however, if Windows Mail can really do any better as some claim it should.
Photos
The Picture and Fax Viewer of XP are no longer around. Vista now has Photo Gallery. For ordinary users however, there seems to be no sense in improving the Picture Viewer if all you wanted was to keep pictures. Major editing is still commonly done with other kinds of software.
Search
XP had no indexing feature to help with searches. XP is generally slow with searches. Computers for ordinary use however, do not always need the fast indexed searches provided by Vista.

That’s it, just repeat the steps for other kinds of documents. You are all set.
Change the Areo Look in Windows Vista

So for instance if you wanted to delete a system file from the system32 directory Windows Vista will tell you that you don’t have access even if you are a administrator. To some this may be a feature but to others this may be a hassle. In this tutorial we will show you how to disable the User Account Protection in Windows Vista.
Go to the run command by holding the windows key and press R. In the run command type secpol.msc and click on OK. If you are prompted to enter the administrative password do so and click on OK. In the local security settings navigate to security settings then local policies and security options.
Set the two first account protection items to No Prompt and select disabled for the remaining items. Close up everything and you are all set.
You will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. This feature can be really useful for preventing spyware from installing on your system. So it might be recommended to just do this to your admin account.
Run Command in the Windows Vista Start Menu
Way back in the good old days of XP there was a little button in the start menu called the Run command. I miss it soo. So we are going to show you how to get it back in the start menu of Windows Vista.
To get it back right click on the task bar and go to the properties. The taskbar is the place where your clock and Start menu are. In the properties go to the Start menu tab. In this tab click on customize and put a check mark beside the Run Command and click on OK. That’s it. I know its a bit of an easy one but if you don’t know where to look you wont find it. Anything that was in the list with the Run Command can be added the same way run was.
Enable the Avalon Engine in Windows Vista
Windows Vista inherited a new set of special effects that occur on the desktop doing day to day tasks. The engine that runs all of this and other graphical tasks is called the Avalon Engine. This engine is present in the current beta copy of Windows Vista but is not enabled by default. To top it all off only some ATI graphic cards are only supported.
So to disable the hardware checking to see this new look on another graphic card. Open up your registry editor and navigate to HKEY_local_machine/Software/Microsoft. In this key create a key called DWM. In the DWM key create a DWORD called EnableMachineCheck and give it a value of 0. Restart Windows and you are done.
To enable the Avalon engine open the following path c:WindowsSystem32UXSS.exe
Enjoy the glass like look.
