Facebook Platform A Brilliant Move

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Facebook opened up to all a while back. I joined.

Usually, these contact networks leave me cold. The business contact networks are a bit too…business-y…..and MySpace is a glitter-covered mess.

Facebook sits somewhere in the middle. It proves the value of usability. It’s easy, transparent, and does what it says on the box.

It’s also a hugely, hugely powerful revenue platform:

“Facebook Platform, which allows companies to build applications — and entire ad or fee-driven businesses — inside Facebook is a brilliant move, which could given Facebook the opportunity to become the next Google. The secret to Google’s success with AdSense was sharing revenue with publishers and letting them figure out how to optimize the revenue. At launch, Facebook isn’t taking a cut of any revenue generated by businesses using the Facebook Platform, but it could easily do so.

Following the crack cocaine model, i.e. give it away for free then charge once users are addicted, businesses that achieve profitable growth through Facebook would have no choice but to accept a revenue share agreement. “

According to SEL:

“Ask.com is launching a new sponsored listings contextual product and will go live the week of May 21st. The Ask contextual product will initially launch within IAC’s own network of sites including Match.com, Ticketmaster, Evite and Citysearch and will then expand to trusted third party publishers. Individual publishers will most likely have to wait until next quarter to gain access to this contextual product“.

Major Internet Directories

SEO, Uncategorized No Comments »

Directories can play an important role in the life of your website both as sources of great, qualified traffic and also in the part they can play in a thorough search engine positioning strategy. Only the major Internet directories are included in this list, that is certainly not to say that these are the only directories that can benefit your website. There are many topical and regional directories that can provide both targeted traffic and relevant links to your website.Major Directories:

Directory Add URL Note
Open Directory Add URL You must first find the appropriate category and submit your site to it. It can take months for your website to get listed and there are rumors about editors editting sites in their own category and not listing competitors. If your website is not listed within 8 weeks it is a good idea to email the editor of your category and/or submit your website to a new category if available.
LookSmart Add URL You must become an editor of Zeal (who power LookSmart results) to submit to their directory.
Yahoo! Add URL You must first find the appropriate category and then submit your site. There are free and paid options. If you have a commercial site you must pay the $299 to submit unless you are submitting to one of the regional directories in which case the free option is available for commercial websites.
Excite   Submission through the Open Directory (above).
Lycos   Submission through the Open Directory (above).

Ms Dewey

Ever wondered if someone is looking over your shoulder while you`re searching?

Ever wanted someone to?

Ms Dewey will watch you while you search, and offer a commentary on your search stream. Depending on the type of query, Ms Dewey may be scathing or complimentary. Or both.

It`s pretty slow, but entertaining. And Microsoft, of all people, is repordedly behind it.

PS - Sorry for the gap in posting. I`m in Tokyo with John, trying to find bars. Which isn`t difficult, but it is pleasantly time consuming. Will post some pics soon, for those interested.

‘Website Optimizer is a free tool that helps AdWords advertisers test different landing pages and determine which one drives the most conversions. A true multivariate testing tool, Website Optmizer allows you to test variations of headlines, promotional copy, and images. The tool allows you to update your site with the winning test combination and continue to experiment’

The program is currently in beta, but hopefully it will get a wider release soon.

Andrew Goodman has a good write-up, and a few concerns:

“(1) I’ll probably use this stuff, if they let me; (2) I’m afraid of the larger consequences, especially if Google begins to “organize and make universally accessible — to itself — the world’s confidential marketing information“

Google could be a little more transparent about the last point.

Pay Pal Blasted

This is strange and disturbing.

Pay Pal offices in San Jose have been the target of an explosion. Thankfully, no one appears to have been injured, however police have been reported as saying the blast was deliberate and no accident.

“It’s definitely not an accident, San Jose police Sgt. Nick Muyo said. “Everything else there is accounted for. This was not any kind of accident or malfunction.Whatever caused this (blast) was pretty strong, added Fire Department Capt. Jose Guerrero. “It’s tough to break one of these windows.
